Search: Colloquium 37 (Spring 2020)

May 1, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm

Crusaders Quenching their Thirst (“Crociati che placano la sete”)
by Francesco Hayez (1791-1882)
Oil on canvas
1836-1850
H: 363 × W: 589 cm

Commissioned by Carlo Alberto, the King of Sardinia from 1831 to 1849, the Venetian artist Francesco Hayez (1791-1882) drew the subject from an episode of Jerusalem Liberated by Torquato Tasso about the First Crusade. Hayez sought to create a monumental work that would depict how the Christians united in suffering and faith, which may have referred to the efforts of the Risorgimento movement to unify Italy. Unfortunately the work took longer than expected to complete, and when the canvas took its place in the Palazzo Reale in 1850, Carlo Alberto had died on July 28, 1849 in Porto, Portugal as an exile.

Topic of Discussion

As our semester comes to an end, we are, in a way, back at the beginning (approximately two millennia later give or take a few centuries): forces from Europe besiege and sack another city in Asia. Be prepared to share with the other members of the colloquium three ways in which the Trojan War and the First Crusade were similar and three ways in which they differed. Support your observations with references to the texts we have studied such as the Iliad, Iphigenia at Aulis, Trojan Women, and the Aeneid.
