Reading

The First Crusade: The Accounts of Eye-Witnesses and Participants edited by August C. Krey, Introduction (Kindle location 164-572), Prologue and Chapter 1 (651-1062), “Emico: May – August, 1096” (1311-1372), and “The Siege and Capture of Nicaea” (2301-2438)

Topic of Discussion

The introduction to Krey’s compilation of eye-witness accounts will provide some helpful background for our brief study of the First Crusade, which is the first of many expeditions that shaped European, African, and Middle Eastern societies during the late medieval period. We will read about the call for the First Crusade by Urban II, pause briefly to read about the violence against other Europeans, especially the Jews, along the way, and then read about the first major encounter between the forces from Europe and the Seljuk Empire which controlled Anatolia. For our discussion on Wednesday, imagine that you are one of the leaders of the Christian forces, for example, Godfrey of Bouillion, his brother Baldwin, Bohemund of Apulia, or Tancred, his nephew, and are holding a press conference after the capture of Nicaea. Be prepared to offer responses to the questions of the correspondents: “Why have you invaded Anatolia? What are your intentions? We have heard from some that you are on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Why? Why go on a pilgrimage as an army?” (Remember that the term “crusade” from the French croisade (“way of the cross”) would not enter common parlance for almost another hundred years.)
