Search: Colloquium 15 (Fall 2019)

October 2 @ 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm

Saul and David by Rembrandt van Rijn (or studio)
Oil on canvas
(H: 130 × W: 164.5 cm)

“The painting shows two figures against a dark background. At left is Saul, seated holding a spear and wiping his eye on a curtain. David kneels before him at the right playing his harp. The subject of Saul and David is usually considered the moment before the frenzy of King Saul, which twice caused him to hurl his spear at David (I Samuel 18: 9–11)” (from Gordenker and Noble, 2013).
